Frequently asked questions

Which images can I extract colors from?

Use a PNG, JPEG, GIF or WebP image that your browser can decode. APNG is accepted as PNG. Upload a file, drop it onto the page, or paste a copied image with Ctrl+V or ⌘V. The Paste image button also works when clipboard access is available.

How are pixel counts calculated and sorted?

Each distinct color in the decoded image is counted at its original size, without resizing or color reduction. Swatches show pixel counts and percentages, with the most-used colors first by default. You can also sort by fewest pixels, hex value or lightness. Zooming the preview does not change the counts.

Why do similar or transparent colors appear as separate swatches?

Colors are compared by their exact RGBA values, including partial transparency. Close shades are not merged into an average color. Fully transparent pixels are excluded by default; enable Include fully transparent pixels to count them too.

Does an animated image contribute colors from every frame?

GIF, APNG and animated WebP images are analyzed using the first decoded frame. Counts do not combine the whole animation. To inspect a different frame, save that frame as a still image and open it in the extractor.

How do I download only the dominant colors in my image?

Keep Most pixels first selected, choose a palette format, and set Colors to export to the number you need. The download takes the first colors in the current sort order, within that format’s limit. Find a color only filters the swatches on screen; it does not restrict the export.

Which palette files can I download after extraction?

Take the extracted colors into Pixelmori or Pixelorama as palette JSON, into Aseprite as palette data, or into GIMP as GPL. Downloads also include Adobe ASE, ACO and ACT, Krita KPL, hex lists, indexed PNG palettes, and JASC, Microsoft RIFF, Pro Motion NG or Game Boy RGB555 PAL. These 14 choices export swatches, rather than a copy of the source artwork.

How large an image can the extractor analyze?

Images can be up to 32 MiB, with at most 16,777,216 decoded pixels and no side longer than 16,384 pixels. Analysis supports up to 262,144 distinct RGBA colors. If an image exceeds a limit, choose a smaller image or one with fewer distinct colors.
