Which palette formats can I convert between?
The converter reads and writes 14 formats: Adobe Swatch Exchange (.ase), Adobe Color Swatches (.aco), Adobe ACT (.act), Krita KPL (.kpl), GIMP / Aseprite GPL (.gpl), Aseprite palette data (.aseprite), Pixelorama JSON, Pixelmori palette JSON, hex lists (.hex), indexed PNG palettes, and four PAL variants: JASC, Microsoft RIFF, Pro Motion NG and Game Boy RGB555. Choose an output format to create a new palette file.
Why might I need to choose the input format for a PAL file?
The .pal extension is used by several different encodings. Automatic detection identifies many palettes, but some binary PAL files look alike. If the preview looks wrong, select the input format used by the program that saved it. Renaming a file’s extension does not convert its contents.
Will my swatch order and duplicate colours be preserved?
The preview keeps the source palette’s order, and exports take the requested number of entries from the beginning. There is no sorting by image pixel usage. Duplicate entries are retained where the destination supports them; Pixelmori palette JSON combines identical colours into one swatch.
What happens to colour names, groups and transparency?
Names and groups carry over where both formats support them; other format-specific metadata may be lost. Alpha is retained in Pixelmori palette JSON, Aseprite palette data, Pixelorama JSON, hex lists and indexed PNG palettes. The other destinations store RGB only and remove transparency. Check the conversion notices and export hints before downloading.
Why can a converted palette have fewer colours or extra black swatches?
Most output formats accept up to 256 colours here. Adobe ASE, Adobe ACO and Krita KPL can export larger palettes, up to the tool’s 65,535-entry limit. Set Colours to export to choose how many leading entries to include. Pro Motion NG and Game Boy RGB555 always write 256 slots, filling unused slots with black; RGB555 also reduces each channel to 5 bits. Input files must be no larger than 16 MiB.
Can this convert a photograph or a full editor project?
Open a swatch or palette file, rather than a photograph or complete editor project. PNG input must contain an indexed colour table; ordinary RGB or RGBA PNGs do not have one. Pixelmori palette JSON is separate from a .pixelmori project. Use the Image palette extractor to build a palette from artwork first.
